In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Iran-backed Houthi fighters have launched a missile and drone attack on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. The assault targeted critical facilities, including weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base, according to Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree. The Saudi civil defense reported the landing of a projectile near the Yemen border, which resulted in injuries to two individuals and damage to a mosque and several other structures.
This military aggression comes amid intensified clashes between Houthi forces and Yemeni government troops, as the latter ramps up its offensive efforts. Yemeni military sources indicated conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region, aimed at Houthi positions and weaponry near the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha. These renewed hostilities follow a week of aggressive Houthi maneuvers, during which they seized control of substantial areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several key islands, thereby consolidating their hold over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the Red Sea’s southern entrance.
Adding to the regional turmoil, the Houthis have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, raising significant concerns about the implications for shipping and energy supplies. The increased importance of this waterway for Saudi oil exports has been underscored by ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. As Saudi Arabia continues to back Yemen’s internationally recognized government, the Houthis’ alignment with Iran exacerbates the already strained relations in the area.
The intensifying conflict has sparked a major humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of civilians fleeing their homes since the violence escalated. Many of these displaced people are struggling to find refuge in safer regions, compounding the already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen. The United Nations has observed a marked rise in displacement since July, and recent fighting has reportedly led to over 500 fatalities. This ongoing violence threatens to worsen Yemen’s severe humanitarian plight and destabilize the broader Red Sea region.
