Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has committed to assertively defending Iran’s stance at international events as he heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Before departing on Tuesday, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran would articulate its position with resolve and advocate for the rights and interests of its people on the global stage.
Joining President Pezeshkian in New York is Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived on Monday to spearhead Tehran’s diplomatic team at the annual UN gathering. Shortly after his arrival, Araghchi engaged in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, discussing agenda items pertinent to the General Assembly. Araghchi stated that Iran’s primary goal is to use the international forum to underscore what it perceives as the legitimacy and rights of the Iranian populace.
The participation of the Iranian delegation occurs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key channel for global oil and gas transport. Iran has communicated through Qatar certain conditions for reopening this critical waterway, while the United States has placed measures affecting Iranian ports.
During the UN session, Araghchi is expected to meet with various foreign ministers and other officials, as Iran seeks to highlight its viewpoints and negotiate its interests against the backdrop of regional disputes and international scrutiny.
