In a significant milestone for Italian politics, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration has become the longest continuously serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his congratulations to Meloni, applauding her leadership and expressing optimism about the ongoing collaboration and solidarity between Türkiye and Italy.
Meloni’s government reached 1,413 consecutive days in power, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days set by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second administration from 2001 to 2005. Since taking office in October 2022 as Italy’s first female prime minister, Meloni has cultivated a strong relationship with Erdoğan. The two have engaged in regular discussions focused on both bilateral matters and broader regional issues.
The partnership between Türkiye and Italy has flourished under their leadership, with efforts to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, energy, and migration. Both countries have also coordinated on regional challenges such as the situations in Libya and Ukraine. A testament to their collaborative efforts was the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit, co-chaired by the leaders in Rome in April 2025, which resulted in the signing of multiple agreements to bolster their strategic and economic ties.
Further strengthening their alliance, Erdoğan and Meloni met recently during the NATO summit held in Ankara in July. During this meeting, they reaffirmed their commitment to boosting trade, increasing mutual investment, and expanding cooperation in defense and other strategic areas. This ongoing dialogue underscores the deepening relationship between the two nations under Meloni’s historic tenure.
