Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region, expressing particular concern over Athens’ increasing defense ties with Israel. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire to maintain positive relations with Greece, but urged Athens to consider Türkiye’s security concerns, especially regarding military collaboration with Israel and the deployment of military equipment on Aegean islands that Türkiye believes should remain demilitarized under existing agreements.
While both Greece and Türkiye have made efforts to improve diplomatic relations in recent years, longstanding disputes persist, particularly over maritime boundaries and the status of the Aegean islands. Greece asserts that its defense initiatives are necessary for its national security and the protection of its sovereignty.
Fidan also took issue with Israel’s activities in Syria, which he described as potentially destabilizing for the region. He reiterated Türkiye’s support for Syria’s efforts to re-establish security, governance, and economic growth, advocating for regional disputes to be resolved through diplomatic means.
In addition to concerns about Greece and Israel, Fidan highlighted ongoing regional security cooperation between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He mentioned that these nations are working on formalizing their security partnership and exploring avenues to enhance collaboration.
Türkiye, according to Fidan, remains committed to regional security coordination, particularly regarding developments in Yemen and threats to Saudi Arabia, stressing the importance of diplomatic efforts to ensure stability in the region.
