Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli convened at the Presidential Complex in Ankara on Tuesday to deliberate on significant national and regional matters. Central to their discussions was Türkiye’s “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, an effort aimed at eradicating terrorism in the country, alongside considerations for constitutional reforms.
The initiative, which took off in 2024, was spurred by Bahçeli’s pivotal call for the imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to advocate for the disarmament of the group. Following Öcalan’s call in February 2025, a process towards disarmament commenced. Türkiye is now contemplating legislative measures to support this initiative, potentially offering leniency to PKK members uninvolved in terrorist acts.
Additionally, the meeting touched on regional developments, notably the Türkiye-Libya maritime boundary agreement recently ratified by Libya’s House of Representatives. Other potential topics included the upcoming Mecca motion anticipated to be introduced in Parliament and the Badr Memorandum.
This meeting marked the fourth encounter between Erdoğan and Bahçeli in the current year, following previous sessions on January 21, April 30, and August 26. These discussions reflect ongoing collaborative efforts to address Türkiye’s domestic and international challenges.
