Việt Nam and Denmark have officially elevated their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, aiming to enhance cooperation in various sectors including trade, renewable energy, and technology. This significant development was announced following discussions between Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen. The agreement marks a new chapter as the two nations approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.
The enhanced partnership seeks to bolster political ties and foster long-term collaboration in crucial economic and strategic areas. Denmark becomes the second European Union member state to form such a partnership with Việt Nam. Central to this relationship is the focus on trade and investment, with both leaders agreeing to reinforce the EU–Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement, enhance market access, and encourage participation in international supply chains. Danish investment in Việt Nam is set to grow, particularly in high-tech industries, environmentally friendly sectors, and high-value-added projects.
Renewable energy and sustainable development are key priorities under the upgraded partnership. Denmark has pledged to share its expertise and technology to assist Việt Nam’s transition to cleaner energy sources, improve energy efficiency, and work towards the country’s net-zero emissions target by 2050. Tô Lâm emphasized the need for Danish support in mobilizing green finance and developing large-scale renewable energy projects, with a particular focus on offshore wind power.
The partnership also encompasses technology and innovation. Both governments agreed to collaborate on science, technology, digital transformation, and emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology. This will involve partnerships between universities, research institutions, and businesses, along with a focus on skills development and professional training.
Additionally, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and international law, supporting closer cooperation through the United Nations and other international platforms. Việt Nam expressed its readiness to help strengthen ties between Denmark and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
To ensure the implementation of the new partnership, relevant ministries and agencies from both countries have been instructed to act on the commitments made. The leaders witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between various organizations and businesses. Prime Minister Frederiksen has accepted an invitation to visit Việt Nam, with both sides eager to translate their upgraded partnership into tangible outcomes.
