In a bid to maintain clarity and fairness on its platform, Spotify is set to introduce new measures aimed at identifying and managing AI-generated artists. Starting September, the streaming giant will label AI-created artist identities with an “AI persona” tag on both artist profiles and track listings. This initiative is designed to help listeners easily differentiate between authentic musicians and artificial artist identities, thereby protecting real artists from the growing presence of AI-generated content.
To further this effort, Spotify will exclude AI personas from personalized recommendations by default, ensuring that listeners receive suggestions based primarily on genuine artists. The company has emphasized the importance of transparency, allowing artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. Additionally, Spotify plans to employ human reviewers and AI-powered tools to identify any undisclosed AI personas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to managing artificially created music content.
The decision comes in response to the rapid increase in AI-generated music. Spotify previously revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the extent of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms. This move highlights Spotify’s commitment to maintaining a quality listening experience and protecting the exposure of genuine musicians.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify recognizes the growing demand from listeners to know whether the artist behind a track is a human or an AI-generated identity. By implementing these new measures, Spotify aims to foster an environment of transparency and trust, ensuring that users have the information they need to make informed choices about the music they consume.
