The 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation is being commemorated in Lefkoşa (Nicosia) by Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), as tensions persist with the Greek Cypriot administration. A Turkish delegation, led by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, is attending the events, which underscore the ongoing political complexities surrounding Cyprus.
In conjunction with the anniversary, Türkiye has deployed naval vessels for public visits and plans to open a new maritime traffic monitoring center in Famagusta. This initiative aims to bolster cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region of strategic importance that has seen its share of geopolitical disputes.
The commemoration occurs against a backdrop of stalled negotiations over Cyprus’s future. Turkish Cypriot leaders continue to push for a two-state solution predicated on sovereign equality, voicing frustration over the international community’s lack of recognition for the TRNC. They also accuse the Greek Cypriot authorities of increasing regional tensions through new military alliances.
Amid these tensions, Turkish Cypriot officials emphasize the necessity of Türkiye’s role as a guarantor state, which they argue is crucial for the island’s security. The United Nations is anticipated to engage in renewed discussions later this month, focusing on the prospects for resuming peace talks for Cyprus.
