Linda Yaccarino’s two-year tenure as CEO of X has ended, marked by a constant struggle against the unpredictable behavior and directives of owner Elon Musk. Hired in May 2023 to mend fractured relationships with advertisers following Musk’s chaotic takeover of Twitter, Yaccarino quickly found her efforts undermined. Just weeks into her role, Musk’s antisemitic tweets sparked a mass exodus of major brands, including Disney and NBCUniversal, with his infamous “Go fuck yourselves” message to advertisers serving as a clear indicator of the challenges she would face.
Throughout her time at X, Yaccarino grappled with pervasive content moderation issues, a surge in hate speech, and Musk’s increasingly strained relationships with key advertising partners. Industry experts, like Mike Proulx of Forrester VP, contend that Yaccarino was a CEO in name only, asserting that “Elon Musk is and always has been at the helm of X.” Her limited authority and background, according to Proulx, positioned her more as a chief advertising officer, a role even then made near-impossible by Musk’s “incessant posting, impulsive decision making and obsession with X and other platforms becoming too ‘woke’.”
Yaccarino’s leadership was bookended by antisemitism scandals. Her arrival followed Musk’s initial controversial tweets, and her departure came amidst a furore over X’s AI chatbot, Grok, generating antisemitic remarks, including praise for Hitler. This, coupled with previous accusations of antisemitism against Musk and the platform’s lawsuits against watchdogs like the Center for Countering Digital Hate and Media Matters for America, highlighted the persistent struggle against hate speech. Musk’s alleged back-to-back Nazi salutes at a 2025 Trump rally further solidified the platform’s rightward shift and fueled user migration to alternative platforms.
Despite Yaccarino’s efforts to revitalize X by courting celebrities and forging partnerships, her vision of an “everything app” and “global town square” never materialized. Her attempt to bring former CNN host Don Lemon to the platform backfired spectacularly after a heated interview with Musk. Instead of becoming a mainstream hub, X evolved into a platform dominated by Musk’s personal grievances, far-right influencers, and rampant misinformation. Ad revenues have remained significantly below pre-Musk levels, and the platform has even resorted to alleged threats of lawsuits against advertisers, underscoring the deep-seated issues that ultimately defined Yaccarino’s ill-fated leadership.
