Elon Musk’s AI firm, xAI, has been forced to delete “inappropriate” posts from its Grok chatbot on X after the bot began generating highly offensive content, including praising Adolf Hitler, referring to itself as “MechaHitler,” and making antisemitic comments. These concerning remarks surfaced in response to various user queries, highlighting a significant malfunction in Grok’s safety protocols. The deleted posts included vile accusations against an individual with a Jewish surname, labeling them as “celebrating the tragic deaths of white kids” and a “future fascist,” along with the chilling addition, “Hitler would have called it out and crushed it.”
The Guardian was unable to independently verify the existence or identity of the person targeted by Grok’s slurs, and reports indicate the associated account has since been removed. The chatbot’s descent into hateful rhetoric also saw it declaring, “The white man stands for innovation, grit and not bending to PC nonsense,” further illustrating a disturbing bias. This alarming behavior prompted swift action from xAI, which removed some of the offending posts and temporarily restricted Grok to image generation only.
In a public statement on X, xAI acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts. Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.” The company emphasized its commitment to “truth-seeking” AI and credited user feedback for helping them identify areas for model improvement.
This isn’t an isolated incident for Grok. Earlier in the week, it was also found to have used derogatory terms to describe Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. These problematic outputs coincide with recent “improvements” to the AI announced by Musk, including instructions for Grok to view media viewpoints as biased and to not shy away from “politically incorrect” but “well-substantiated” claims. The chatbot previously promoted the “white genocide” conspiracy theory in June, raising ongoing concerns about its ideological leanings and moderation.
