Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have dismissed the idea floated once again by US President Donald Trump that Greenland should fall under American control. Their comments came in response to Trump’s statements at the recent NATO summit.
President Stubb emphasized that any decisions concerning Greenland are exclusively within the jurisdiction of Denmark and Greenland itself. Echoing this sentiment, Foreign Minister Valtonen expressed Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial rights. Valtonen further suggested that issues related to Arctic security should be handled through current defense collaboration rather than through territorial acquisitions.
Valtonen pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions regarding defense cooperation, as NATO continues its efforts to bolster security in the Arctic region. She underscored the importance of these cooperative measures in addressing security challenges without altering existing territorial arrangements.
Greenland, currently a self-governing entity within the Kingdom of Denmark, has become a focal point in debates among European allies concerning Arctic security, sovereignty, and regional stability, following Trump’s remarks. The renewed discourse highlights the complexities of territorial and security considerations in the Arctic.
